Is Granite the Best Kitchen Countertop Option?

If you are a fan of home improvement shows, you probably already have some strong opinions on granite. After all, most of the participants of those shows would rather see granite countertops than a solid foundation. And with granite being highly durable, all natural, stain resistant, and stylish, it’s easy to see why it’s so sought-after.

But, before you pull out your wallet and start your own kitchen demo, here are a few important things to consider.

Is granite right for you?

While it may be a popular material among many homeowners, granite doesn’t necessarily fit all needs, lifestyles, and aesthetics. For example, if you have small children and have “easy to clean” high on your priorities list, then granite certainly has your back.

What makes granite so popular?

Granite does have a lot going for it. The strong, natural material has the potential to add incredible value to home, both style and price.

  • Durability - Granite (like marble and soapstone) is a natural material mined and refined, or cut, into large solid slabs. One of the most heat-resistant options on the market, granite won’t be damaged or weakened by your range, cooktop, or even a hot pan placed directly on it. Granite is also hard enough to dull your knives before taking a scratch itself, and completely stain-resistant if sealed properly.

  • Sustainability - Completely natural, granite is mined from the earth and, with proper maintenance, lasts for many years longer than lower-price alternatives. Each strong, heavy slab need only be wiped down after use and re-sealed annually to maintain its beauty and integrity through a lifetime of daily use and trials.

  • Value - Granite countertops don’t depreciate, and their demand is only increasing, promising a significant return on your investment. Because of their natural formation, each slab is unique, as well. No two granite countertops will ever be identical, making each kitchen counter its own one-of-kind piece of art -- an additional selling point that may just tip the scales for future buyers.

  • Maintenance - While granite is not completely maintenance-free, the regular upkeep is relatively simple and can easily be completed in an evening -- no professional handyman needed! Granite is a porous material (unlike manufactured stone, such as quartz), which means that it can, and will, absorb liquids if not sealed. This isn’t absolutely necessary as the liquids will typically evaporate on their own, but keeping your granite sealed not only makes it more durable and allows it to last longer, it also makes it more sanitary and easier to clean.

  • To clean: Use a gentle cleaner or soap and a non-abrasive cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface after use. Avoid vinegar or acid-based cleaners as they can eat away at the sealant and causing staining.

  • To maintain - Apply sealant regularly and wipe off any excess, let it set and you’re good to go! Just remember that it’s always a good idea to use the same type of sealer as it came with (not all types play well together).

So, are granite countertops the best?

While you’ll have to decide whether they are best for your needs and lifestyle, it’s no doubt that granite (and other natural stone) is an ideal balance of durability, sustainability, and value. The sleek stone provides a look of luxury, while remaining resistant to damage and easy to clean and maintain for years.
